Trip Around the World

Overview

  • This theme is designed to take your giftee on a metaphorical trip around the world but, if budget allows for it, feel free to take them on the real thing.
  • It works for just about anyone but keep it in mind for people who love to travel.
  • Has your giftee always wanted to go somewhere (eg: France, Thailand, Africa…) but hasn’t been able to afford it? If so, this would be a great opportunity to take them there (in the metaphorical sense).
  • Consider these options to get things rolling:
    • Dining/food and beverage:
      • For MOST continents, a night out at an ethnic restaurant works beautifully. Eg: Japanese, Ethiopian, Italian, Brazilian….
      • On a budget? Get take out (eg: Chinese food, hamburgers). Use your imagination here. For instance, make your giftee ‘french’ toast for breakfast or consider giving spices associated with a specific continent (eg: curry powder).
    • Alcohol:
      • Again, you can get beerwine or liquor from just about any continent. There’s a beer in Newfoundland that’s actually made from iceberg water. Although it’s not from Antarctica, you could easily fit it into the theme. As with all themes, it’s not about sticking to any rules, be creative.
    • Travel:
      • Got a trip planned? Incorporate that into the theme.
      • Airplanes are often referred to as birds. Give your giftee a stuffed bird and have it represent tickets somewhere.
      • Luggage or bags can work into this theme nicely.
    • Antarctica:
      • This sounds tough, but it’s actually not that bad.
      • A bag of ice could represent the continent nicely. Perhaps a trip to the zoo to see the penguins or a snow globe.
  • Try to incorporate all the continents in this gift. This is easier than you might think.
    • Think about virtually traveling somewhere.
      • Use Google Earth to explore the Seven Wonders of the modern world.
      • Book an escape room adventure involving a foreign land (eg: The Forbidden Temple) or traveling (eg: Mutiny on the High Seas, The Great Train Heist).
    • Make a day of it. Something like this: eggs and bacon for breakfast (North America), then ice skating (Antarctica), sushi for lunch (Asia), a Swedish massage in the afternoon (Europe) and for dinner put some “shrimp on the barbie” (Australia) with a wine from Argentina (South America) and watch a movie like “Out of Africa”.
  • Wrap the gift with a picture of the globe, or wrap each individually with a map of the continent they represent.
  • Wrapping paper with planes, trains, boats, buses, palm trees, any animals not native to your area, etc.
  • You could put pictures of postage stamps on the wrapping paper as well.
  • Tie a small travel-related gift into the ribbon around the gift (eg: a neck pillowcompression socks for long trips).
  • Play music from each continent when you give the gift. For Antarctica, try playing the sounds of a winter storm.
  • Use quotes or phrases that relate to your theme when you present the gifts or in your card. For example:
    • Have a good “trip”!
    • I’ve searched the world over for someone like you. Glad I finally found you. Happy anniversary!
    • I hope you feel on top of the world this birthday!
    • Even though we’re worlds apart, just wanted you to know I was thinking about you.
