Horses

Overview

  • Use this theme for the horse lover you know.
  • It’s always useful for people who own horses, but they don’t have to own one to appreciate this theme.
  • Think about things that a horse lover would love to receive or do:
    • For those that have a horse (or access to one), consider gear like a saddle, bridle, riding helmet. Even if they don’t have a horse, jeans or a cowboy hat could work here.
    • Activities like an afternoon of horseback riding/lessons or a hay ride.
    • Events like show jumping, dressage, a rodeo, polo or even seeing a sports team with a horse based name (eg: Broncos, Colts, Mustangs).
    • rocking horse or stick horse could be great for a younger giftee (or for those who are young at heart).
  • You can keep the theme simple and just present gifts around horses or you can incorporate other themes. For instance:
    • This theme has a lot of overlap with our Rodeo/Cowboy theme so have a look at that for more ideas.
    • Horse lovers often enjoy many other outdoor activities and sports. Have a look at our Outdoorsy or Sporty themes.
  • Stuck for ideas? Consider giving to a charity that provides a sanctuary for neglected or abused horses.
  • On a budget? Watch a horse based movie with your giftee (eg: Seabiscuit, The Horse Whisperer).
  • Think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to stretch associations between a gift and a theme:
    • Consider what might work with the term ‘horse’ power (eg: carsboatsmotorcycles-real, toy or just take a ride in one).
    • Iron horse could represent a motorcycle, but is also an old term used for a train.
    • Horseback riders need rope, consider a skipping rope in your gift ideas.
  • See if you can find wrapping that fits the theme (eg: horses on the wrapping paper) or attach your own horse images to the gift.
  • Try using rope instead of ribbon.
  • Tie a small rodeo related gift into the ribbon around the gift (eg: a horseshoe).
  • Lassos could be worked in here. Try buying some string and having your giftee use a makeshift lasso to rope their gifts from across the room.
  • When you present each gift, try to work it into the theme with a short explanation. For instance, if you’re giving someone jeans, you might say “I got you some jeans so you don’t get saddle sores on our next trail ride”
  • Use quotes or phrases that relate to your theme when you present the gifts or in your card. For example:
    • I heard from the horse’s mouth that you were having a birthday. Have a good one!
    • Saddle up and have a great birthday!
    • Wild horses couldn’t drag me away from you. Happy anniversary!
    • Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.
    • Get up on your high horse this year.
